CARICOM Heads say Region equal to the task

In face of rising global economic, other challenges…
CARICOM Heads of Government have given the assurance that the region is well able and prepared to respond to whatever challenges the immediate future may bring. This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr Roger Luncheon.

“The meeting, the President indicated, showed with the greatest clarity that during the immediate future, the community will be challenged, but he explained that the Heads assured one and all that the region was prepared to respond fully to those challenges,” he told reporters last Thursday at his weekly post-Cabinet press briefing.

On other related matters, he reported that it was largely felt that Guyana had done a swell job of successfully hosting the 30th Meeting of the Conference of the CARICOM Heads of Government from July 2 to 4.

“The curtains came down on Sunday on the eventful meeting of the Heads. Cabinet was unreserved in its praise of the performance of the organisers who executed well,” Dr Luncheon said, adding that “the best of Guyana was actually showcased” during the time that the Heads were here.

Noting that Guyana’s President Bharrat Jagdeo, who chaired the long business sessions, including the completion of forty-odd agenda items, is now Chairman of the 15-member bloc, Dr Luncheon said Cabinet has been advised that the original remarks made by those Heads who spoke at the opening ceremony of the caucus were duly noted and dealt with during their deliberations.

“The imperative of implementing the decisions of the Heads was again endorsed, and work under the Jagdeo Chairmanship would soon commence to give the recognition that that imperative of implementing decisions would be honoured during the term of office of this Chairman,” he said. (Priya Nauth)
