BAG bay attendant at Lavi’s Supermarket in New Amsterdam, Berbice, Sunita Devi Narine, 18, was given a one year suspended jail sentence on Thursday, for theft. She pleaded guilty, before Magistrate Krishendat Persaud, to stealing a ‘Motorolla’ cell phone valued $10,000, property of Stanford Edwards.
Presiding in new Amsterdam Court, the magistrate was told Edwards went into the business place, on Republic Road in the town on July 7.
The shopper had placed his bag containing the phone in the bay and proceeded to make some purchases but, when he retrieved it, he discovered that the instrument was missing.
The virtual complainant made a report at Central Police Station in New Amsterdam where the defendant confessed to the larceny and the phone was recovered.
Narine expressed deep regret over the incident and promised there would no be no recurrence.
The magistrate warned her, however, that, if she is convicted of another offence, she would have to serve the one year in jail.
But, if she commits no offence, her record will be cleared.
