Success of Guyanese immigrants is due to their innate abilities

I refer to Ms Ann Singh’s letter GC 22/06/09 where she boasts that her family, including Daniel Singh, were insulated against the various rich ethical and metaphysical cultures and religions of the Guyana environment and were fed on strictly Biblical lore and this made them all successful individuals in the USA.

Her underlying arrogance and contempt for Guyana’s rich and varied cultural heritage is appalling. She dismisses the various cultures and religions in her early Guyanese environment as of no value though Hindu and Muslim children and those of the African tradition were brought up to be even more ethical and respectful of God and men, religion and the family. And many of these same Hindu and Muslim and African children, now grown up in the USA and brought up on the Koran, Bhagwad Gita, Ramayana and the African traditions still so much a part of our national ethos, have achieved high profile success, far more so than Daniel Singh.

The monumental achievements of successful Guyanese immigrants to the USA is certainly not due to their allegiance to any particular Holy Book but rather to their innate abilities and the Guyanese social/cultural ambience from which they derived. If Ann Singh in her arrogance still feels that her particular brand of Biblical lore is the basis of success,, then the Jewish Holy books – the Talmud and even Kabbula – are a far more powerful basis of success since Jewish people are the most successful Americans.
