DURING a recent campaign in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne), the Government Analyst Food and Drug department’s regional arm seized a huge quantity of expired, unlicensed, unlabelled, improperly labelled, misbranded and other defective food stuff off the shelves from supermarkets and grocery stores. During the exercise, it was also discovered that some distributors and proprietors had tampered with the expiry date on products, wiped off old expiry dates and affixed new dates either by cutting them off from labels or concealed them with price tags. Among those items found to have been tampered with were club social, salted crackers, Kraft real mayonnaise and creamy French salad dressing, Golden Cream margarine, Glow Spread margarine, Cadbury milk chocolate, Sqezy dishwashing liquid and Nestle lactogen infant formula. In this regard the Government Drug and Food department is urging proprietors, managers and operators of retail outlets to remove defective foods from their shelves. Likewise, wholesalers and distributors are encouraged to desist from offering for sale to retailers food stuff which are close to expiry date. Warehouse Managers are also advised to practice proper stock rotation, first-in-first out. In the wake of the exercise, the Government Food and Drug department is urging consumers to examine food labels for expiry dates before purchasing.
