Berserk man jailed for wounding school vendor

CLINTON Adams also known as Colin Abrams, 37, of Islington, East Bank Berbice, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for the May 7 unlawful wounding of school vendor Yvonne Permaul.

The prisoner, discharged from New Amsterdam Hospital earlier on Friday, was taken to New Amsterdam Court, still dressed in a patient’s gown, with his torso wrapped in plaster of Paris, on a stretcher.

He told Magistrate Krishendat Persaud that he is a mad man but the Police informed the Court that there was no confirmation of his status by the National Psychiatric Hospital.

Adams said he committed the offence after being taunted and, seeing the virtual complainant nearby, retaliated by inflicting the injury on her.

He expressed regret over the incident which occurred when he went berserk and stabbed Permaul in the neck, after being called names by students of Vryman’s  Erven Secondary School, outside the annex also housed in Trinity Street, New Amsterdam.

Adams was subsequently shot in his abdomen and one foot.

While he was in Court for the sentencing, Permaul was vending, as usual, at the school location from where she has been conducting her business for some eight years.
