Minister Manickchand, on her last visit to Linden, during the launch of the Single Parent Assistance Programme in April 2009, pledged to assist the committee by donating sewing machines to support their trade.
This intervention will complement the Uniform Assistance Programme which began in 2001, by President Bharrat Jagdeo, after he found, during his outreaches, children were not attending school because their parents could not afford school uniforms.
Minister Manickchand Friday handed over two Singer sewing machines to Anna Bridgelall, a member of the committee, who will be employed in sewing uniforms to be distributed to needy children from various schools.
Government has since spent about $300M to assist children living in difficult circumstances with school uniforms so that they can attend school; this assistance also includes a School Feeding Programme. (GINA)
