EX-SOLDIER Lindany Phillips, 22, of Lot 1 Meadow Bank, Georgetown, was yesterday sentenced to 16 months imprisonment for wounding her paramour, Carl Halley, during an altercation last June 7.
Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle imposed the custodial punishment on her after she changed her plea to guilty.
The magistrate asked Phillips if she was aware that the offence carries a penalty of imprisonment and the woman maintained her stand.
Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, said the couple shared a visiting relationship but, that day, had a misunderstanding over a cell phone call.
The Prosecutor said Phillips stabbed Halley on the right side of his chest and the wound damaged his lungs.
However, the wounded man was in Court and asked the magistrate to have mercy on Phillips.
Hours after sentence was pronounced, attorney-at-law Mr. Winston Murray made an appearance, on behalf of Phillips, requesting that the case be recalled on the ground that the convict did not understand the consequences of her plea.
But the magistrate declared she had already made her ruling and pointed out that, when Phillips was asked if she was aware of the penalty for the crime, she did not change her plea. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
