THE massive investment by Government to excavate blocked drains in Pomeroon coconut estates is now paying off.
As a result, Charity/Urasara Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Chairman, Mr. Ayube Khan said farmers are looking towards a bright future in the coconut industry.
Also a member of the New Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) Board, he said two shipments of dried coconuts have already left, through Pomeroon River, for North America and the Caribbean.
According to him, the export of coconuts from Pomeroon is the result of a coordinated effort between the farmers and the Regional Administration, through which the former are paid $15 for each coconut by a private overseas buyer.
Khan said the exporter is looking to invest in establishing a coconut water bottling plant in Pomeroon, so that product can be sold in the Caribbean and further abroad.
A coconut water bottling plant is already in operation at Marlbourgh, Lower Pomeroon and the certified factory is exporting to Trinidad, where a bottling plant buys 30,000 water coconuts every week, he disclosed.
