GDF Corporal charged with raping Army cleaner

GUYANA Defense Force (GDF) Corporal Anthony Hunte, 29, of Lot 610 Block 22, Wismar, Linden, was yesterday charged with raping a 39-year-old woman.

Before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, it was alleged that he committed the indictable offence on June 9, in Berbice Magisterial District.

Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, alleged that the soldier, who claimed he has been in the Army for nearly 12 years, had carnal knowledge of the women while she was employed as a cleaner with the GDF.

The Prosecutor said the victim reported the incident to a sergeant who, in turn, made a report at Camp Ayanganna and, when Hunte found out, he started acting as if he was mentally ill and even attempted to jump out of a window.

She said Hunte pounced on the virtual complainant out of a clump of bushes as she was on her way home.

However, the accused told the Court he knew the woman for about one year and they shared an intimate relationship.

Hunte said, because he did not deliver $25,000 he promised her after they had sex, she made the allegation.

He was refused bail and remanded to prison until July 17 while the case is transferred to Kwakwani Court in Berbice.
