DEFENDING champions of the Georgetown Football Association/Cellink Plus Premier League, Alpha United, and Sunburst Camptown both recorded victories when the competition continued at the Tucville ground on Sunday evening.
Alpha United defeated Fruta Conquerors by a 3-1 margin in the feature match while Sunburst Camptown beat GFC 2-0.
Shawn Bishop registered a double for Alpha United in the 43rd and 75th minutes, but this was after Dwight Peters outpaced his marker to collect a through pass and finished with a clinical shot that had goal written all over it from the time it left his boot to give the eventual winners a slim 1-0 lead. Bishop then made it 2-0 two minutes from the halfway mark.
Basking in confidence with a 2-0 lead on resumption for the second session, Alpha United continued to dominate the proceedings with good buildups from the midfield, but their strikers were unable to penetrate Fruta Conquerors’ defence as the home team made useful substitutions which allowed them to force Alpha on the defensive.
Fruta Conquerors then went into attacking mode and the move resulted in their recording a consolation goal in the 67th minute as Lester Peters found his target off a rebound from a free kick.
From this point onwards, Fruta Conquerors upped the ante and launched numerous counter-attacks on their opponents in search of the equaliser but were denied, as Manasseh Primo and Devon Forde were both off target one time each, even though they both were presented with open goal situations.
A subsequent counter-attack by the defending champions enabled Edison Gomes to pick out an unmarked Bishop who slotted home easily in the 75th minute to complete his double after Peters had made a superb cross to Gomes earlier.
Earlier in the evening, after a goalless match between Camptown and GFC, Orlando Gilgeous sent the Campbellville-based team into the lead in the 70th minute and Kwame LaFleur accounted for the second goal in the final minute of regulation time (90th).
With five victories to their name from a similar amount of matches, Alpha United have regained the lead in the points standing with 15 points, the same as GDF, but the defending champions have a better goal difference as they have so far scored 24 goals and have only conceded two, while GDF have scored 15 goals and are yet to concede one.
Camptown with nine points from four matches are currently third in the standings. They have so far scored six goals and conceded four.
Fruta Conquerors are fourth with seven points from five matches.
GFC remain at the bottom of the table winless and pointless.
The competition will continue on Friday at the same venue with another double-header. (Michael DaSilva)
