TWO more pieces of Local Government legislation are expected to be tabled before the National Assembly today.
This is according to Head of the Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon.
They are the Municipal and District Council (Amendment) Bill and the Fiscal Transfer Bill, both of which address reform to the Local Government system.
Already tabled are the Local Government Commission and Local Government (Amendment) Bills which were presented to the House last Thursday, and the Local Authorities (Elections) (Amendment) Bills. They have all been sent to the Special Select Committee.
He also disclosed that legislation that would provide for the appointment of lay magistrates will be tabled.
This would raise the ceiling at the magisterial level for adjudicating on mitigation dealing with petty debt.
He also announced that shortly to be tabled, as soon as the Members of Parliament forum and cabinet conclude their last stage of assessment, is the Legal Practitioners Bill governing the legal practice.
“And also legislation to institute heightened penalties for damage to public property and provisions for the recovery of cost of repairs to those who are responsible for such damage,” the Cabinet Secretary disclosed.
