THE historic Sixth International Qaseeda Mehfil was held recently at the Anna Catherina Islamic Complex. by the Muslim Youth League of Guyana, Guyana United Sadr Islamic Anjuman, and The Anna Catherina Islamic Complex.

The event saw participants in both the junior and senior categories in the male and senior divisions.

Imam Ahmad Ally, Hafiz Sarafat Ally, Al Haj Djameel Ashruf, Al Haj Abdus Sattaur Janki and Hakeem Khan led the delegations from Trinidad & Tobago, Suriname and Holland and Guyana respectively. The Suriname delegations also comprised Al Haj Basheer Khudabux and Hadjie Munaf Madhar, leaders of organisations in Suriname.

Qaseeda is the singing of songs in praise of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAS) and while it originated out of the Asian sub-continent, it is recognised as an important part of Islamic culture.

Next year’s event will be hosted by the Anjuman Sunnatul Jamaat Association (ASJA) of Trinidad & Tobago in April and the National Qaseeda Competition will be held in December this year to select persons from Guyana to participate in Trinidad & Tobago.
