Mainstay/Whyaka begins harvesting organically grown pineapples

FARMERS at Mainstay/Whyaka on Essequibo Coast have begun harvesting organically grown pineapples and the Toshao, Ms. Yvonne Pearson said she is anticipating a bumper crop.

According to her, more acreage was put under cultivation to meet the big demand for processed pineapple chunks abroad while supplying the local market with the fresh fruit.

Pearson said the Mainstay Processing Factory has resumed production of the product and a new line, organic pineapple juice is expected to be produced soon.

Scores of Amerindians are employed at the factory and the planters are getting good prices for their produce.
