Three drown in Abary Creek mishap

Three persons drowned in the Abary Creek yesterday when a boat they were travelling in capsized.

The dead were identified as Satesh Kowsilla, 33, and Diana Ramjeet, eight, both of Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, and Sharda Singh, 38, of No. 2 Village, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice.

Reports stated that the three were part of a group of several persons who were on an outing in the Abary Backdam and were crossing the Abary Creek from the right bank when the boat capsized in midstream.

Eyewitnesses said that there were nine persons in the boat at the time and that the swell from a passing boat may have been responsible for its turning over.

Sharda Singh was taken out of the Creek in an unconscious condition and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

A search party late yesterday afternoon recovered the bodies of Kowsilla and Ramjeet.

Relatives said that the dead man was taking some overseas-based relatives on a tour of the Abary Backlands at the time of the mishap.

He reportedly managed to rescue his eight year old daughter Angelica and took her ashore.

He went back into the Creek to rescue others, but drowned.

A number of overseas based relatives who were in the boat were rescued and were treated at the New Amsterdam Hospital and sent home.
The Police in West Berbice were last night investigating the mishap.
