Mr. GOSSAIxS attempt to tie swine flu to evolution is simply just a weak attempt. I am by no means as scientific-minded as Mr. Gossai. It is also not my intention to have a discussion on evolution. I have been there before. However, it is important to clarify his statement since it could give the wrong understanding.
In his letter on May 1, he stated that the swine flu virus xevolved from previous strains,x thus giving credence to evolution. I would like to inform Mr. Gossai that it did not evolve, but rather mutated. There is a big difference. Mutation has to do with adapting and changing at a much rapid pace than the evolution process.
The only way a virus can reproduce is by infecting a cell or by mutating. Therefore, viruses must always stay ahead of the evolution process as the host cell can adapt or evolve to where a virus can no longer infect. Thus viruses mutate. The swine flu virus mutated; not evolved.
We thank God for the knowledge that he has given to scientists who are frantically working on a cure. But we should also pray for Godxs protection and use our common sense.
