GUYANA’S lone swimmer at the Carifta Games Swimming Championships, currently under way in Aruba, Niall Roberts is almost assured of winning a medal after registering a good time in the boys’ 50-metre butterfly event yesterday morning.
According to Guyana Amateur Swimming Association’s General Secretary Karen Pilgrim, Roberts, entered the 50m fly yesterday morning seeded 5th (with an entry time of 26.20 seconds), and is now seeded second in the final which was set for yesterday afternoon, having finished the preliminary heat in 25.96 seconds.
Pilgrim said it will be a close race as all eight finalists are within a second of each other, but “we have the hope of a medal”.
On day one (Thursday), Roberts made a good start in his first event – the 100m butterfly and entered seeded 9th, but placed 7th overall in the preliminaries, earning him a place in the finals later that day.
Pilgrim informed that Roberts’ seed time was one minute 00.98 seconds (1:00.98) and he bettered this by a little over half a second, with his preliminary time of 1:00.44.
She said there was a total of 21 swimmers in this event.
She informed that Roberts continued to improve on his time and placement in the final of the 100m butterfly on Thursday evening and he placed 5th overall with a time of 1:00.02.
