Banks DIH employee dies in freak accident

Michael Grant
FORTY-YEAR-OLD Michael Grant, an employee of Banks DIH was yesterday pronounced dead on arrival at the St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital, after he slipped and fell at his workplace, sustaining injuries to the back of his head.

Reports said that shortly after 08:30 h Grant, who is employed as a Salesman at Banks Wholesale Liquor Store on Brickdam, was assisting another employee in removing a canister when he slipped and fell onto the floor.

The incident occurred at the time that downtown Georgetown was experiencing an accumulation of water, caused by heavy rain, resulting in the business premise being flooded.

The injured man was picked up and rushed to hospital, but had apparently died on his way there.

When the Guyana Chronicle visited Grant’s home at Lot 93 Laing Avenue, West Ruimveldt, his sorrowing wife Sharon Datsun, their four-year-old son Delroy and other family members, huddled together, were being comforted by neighbours and Sharon’s workmates.

The grieving widow who is employed at the Guyana Post Office Corporation recalled that her husband left home in good spirits yesterday morning, and even made her a cellular phone call while on his way to work. She said that she did not work yesterday and was at home when she received a message from her sister in Barbados, informing her that her husband was dead. The woman in Barbados had somehow gotten the information before her.

Shocked out of her wits, she hastened down to St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital where the worst fear was confirmed. The woman said no one could say for sure whether her husband died by drowning when he fell into the water, or whether he succumbed to head injuries, so she will have to await the results of a post mortem examination to be held later.

Meanwhile, this newspaper was unsuccessful in its bid to get an official comment from the management of Banks DIH.

Grant, who had worked with the company for the last seven years, was initially posted at the Banks DIH outlet in Kitty, before being transferred to the Brickdam facility where he met his demise.

He is survived by his wife Sharon, son Delroy, parents and siblings. (SHIRLEY THOMAS)
