GPL to determine cause of Kingston plant fuel tank failure in one week

THE Guyana Power and Light (GPL) company is in the process of determining the cause of the fuel spill which occurred Sunday at its power plant in Kingston, and is expected to produce a report within a week.

The mishap occurred at around 18:30h resulting in approximately 7,500 barrels of fuel overflowing into parts of the plant’s compound and seeping into drains, sections of Water Street and the Demerara River.

Immediate action was taken to contain the leakage through the collaborative effort of GPL, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard and Air Wing, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ministry of Public Works and Communications.

The GDF assisted in conducting an aerial reconnaissance of the Demerara River and its outfall and in the process, small patches of fuel were noticed. Special arrangement to remove the remaining 32,000 gallons of fuel in the damaged tank is being implemented.

The EPA has been on the scene since yesterday monitoring and rendering assistance in the clean up.

GPL, in a press release today, noted that operations at the Kingston plant have not been affected by the leak and alternative arrangements were completed to access fuel from the second bulk storage tank.
