According to release from the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, the production offers something for every taste whether it be the vibrant and colourful dances performed by the Dharmic Nritya Sangh to celebrate the birth of Shri Ram, his marriage to Sita and his coronation as king of Ayodhya, the classical movements of the dancers in Ravan’s Court or Sita’s soulful plea in the Ashok Vatika gardens or the fast paced technical fight scenes or yet still the fantastic combinations of music performed by our own local artistes. These will be complemented by a glittering and breathtaking selection of costumes and some innovative settings. Most of the sets have been specially created by Andrew Arts for the production.
Ramlila, the enactment of the life story of Lord Rama, was brought to Guyana by the East Indians during the indentureship period. In those days, Ramlila performances involved an all male cast who both sang and acted.

The Sabha’s production is a more modern approach, complete with the necessary technology. This will be the first time the production is undertaken by Guyanese in the dance-drama format.

Ramlila, which captures all of the important elements of the Ramayan from the events leading up to Rama’s birth all the way to his crowning as King of Ayodhya after returning from exile, promises to be both entertaining and inspirational. Omkar Tiwari and Pretima Prashnajeet are cast as Ram and Sita in what promises to be a truly historic production.

Tickets for the production are available at the National Cultural Centre, Dharmic Sanskritik Kendra – Prashad Nagar, Bhagwan’s on Water Street, Annjees in City Mall and Sheriff Street, Jairam’s Little India Store – America Street and at the Murti Shop, West Coast Demerara. Ramlila is supported by the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) and GT&T.
