Defending champions MHS join LTI and LFS with effortless wins

DEFENDING champions Mackenzie High School (MHS) showed no remorse for Wisburg Secondary, as they played without star player Akeem Kanhai but still scored a crushing 73-15 win to start their defence of the fifth Victory Valley Royals Linden Schools Under-19 basketball championships on Monday at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court.

The other scheduled game yesterday between Linden Foundation Secondary (LFS) and Linden Technical Institute (LTI) was not played due to rain after they won their matches last Friday.

MHS should have played New Silvercity Secondary to open the championship last Wednesday but this had to be postponed also due to rain.

Yesterday MHS eventually took the court and brushed aside Wisburg’s thin challenge as Sheldon Noel (Jr) shot in a game-high 30 points and he was ably assisted by Devon Wilson who swished in nine points.

Playing without their top player Akeem Kanhai, Noel and Wilson showed that the team has other players to step up to carry the team and take care of business.

In what became the first game of the championship last Friday, LFS scored a resounding 57-18 win over Wisburg Secondary behind Abu Mohammed’s 19 points and Godfrey LaRose with 17.

Maverick Angel was the leading player for Wisburg Secondary as he gained 13 points in the loss.

In the preceding game LFS signalled their intentions of a first championship with a 57-18 points thrashing of Wisburg Secondary.

In the other game LTI whipped Christianburg Wismar Secondary (Multi) 48-13 as Travis Leitch netted 13 points for the victorious LTI side.

Clifton Halley was the best player for Multi as he put together six of their 13 points.

This tournament has attracted six school teams in Linden where a round-robin format is being played to decide the final four. The final is set for April 29 at the tournament venue at the MSC hard court.
