Accused pending Assizes trial charged with $500,000 larceny

MAGISTRATE Chandra Sohan, on Tuesday, refused bail to Jermaine Samuels who is charged with a $500,000 larceny from a person.

The New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, upheld an objection to the grant by Police Lance Corporal Roberto Figueira, who informed that the defendant had been allowed pre-trial liberty pending a trial at the Berbice Assizes when he allegedly committed this other offence.

The Prosecutor said Samuels has been indicted for robbery under arms and attempted murder after he was fingered in a gang which staged a daring heist at Ma Retraite, East Bank Berbice, on June 23, 2007.

In the new case, Samuels is alleged to have been the pickpocket who stole the half a million dollars, including foreign currency, from Ramcharran (only name given) at Bush Lot race course, Corentyne, last March 15.

The next hearing has been scheduled for April 29 at Whim Court, Corentyne.
