THE Guyana Fire Service (GFS) yesterday received a quantity of fire fighting equipment and gear from the French Guiana Ambassador to Guyana, Richard Barbeyron. Some of the items received are fire extinguishers, burns kits, safety belts and other resourceful items that will aid fire fighters in executing their challenging duties in a more prepared manner. Chief Fire Officer Marlon Gentle expressed appreciation to the French Ambassador and said that the donation was timely and that it will aid fire fighters to be more efficient as they work to protect life and property. Ambassador Barbeyron said that the donation is one of many gestures coming out of the fruitful bilateral relations between the two countries and explained that his tenure in Guyana will be used to foster stronger ties even as Guyana seeks to open a Consulate in his country. The Ambassador said that Guyana will also be benefiting from more interventions that will assist in other sectors such as agriculture and security. This year’s budgetary allocation will be used to upgrade and purchase new equipment, expand training and other educational subventions and maintain fire stations. The Ambassador said that the Chief Fire Officer of his country will be in Guyana today and will be meeting with his counterpart in Guyana and other Government officials as the two countries seek to extend their relationship.
The equipment, along with the $826,490M allocated in the 2009 Budget for the GFS will enhance its capability.
