England wait on Strauss fitness

ANDREW Strauss is hopeful of recovering from a hamstring injury in time to lead England in Friday’s opening one-day international against the West Indies.

The opener picked up the injury during Sunday’s Twenty20 defeat in Trinidad but a scan has showed that the injury is not as bad as was first feared.

His progress will be monitored this week before a final decision is made.

The West Indies expect to welcome back captain Chris Gayle who has been out with a hamstring tear.

Gayle is the third best one-day batsman in the world according to the International Cricket Council’s ranking list and his return will undoubtedly bolster the home side’s batting line-up.

England, on the other hand, are yet to settle on an opening pairing that can fully exploit the power plays on offer during the opening 10 overs.

But stand-in coach Andy Flower has hinted that Essex’s Ravi Bopara and Worcestershire’s wicketkeeper-batsman Steve Davies, who opened in the Twenty20 defeat, could be given another go.

“One of the good things that came out of Sunday was that we had two young guys opening the batting for England,” said Flower.

“Davies did really well in his first game, and we had Bopara who is a classy-looking player with a high ceiling.

“It was nice to watch those two open the batting for England and taking advantage of those power-play overs is fundamental.”

The duo put on 25 in just 19 balls before Bopara departed but Davies, who was making his England debut, went on to top score in the innings with 27.

“I’ve done it for Worcester for the last couple of years and I’ve had success at the top of the order so I’m comfortable doing it and it’s all I know, really, so there’s no extra pressure,” Davies said.

“I enjoy doing it. For me it’s the best time to bat. My game is suited to the top of the order when I can use the pace of the bowlers to hit over the infield and try and pierce the gaps”. (BBC Sport)
