Two angels on Mash Day

I NEED the help of this letter column. Last Monday after the Mashramani Float Parade finished, I was walking in a thick crowd of people (hundreds upon hundreds) on Vlissengen Road. Some were coming while others were going. After about walking through for about fifteen minutes, the unthinkable happened and my worst fears were confirmed. A male seized my left hand and pulled out a piece of jewelry I had on. I was left struck. I didn’t know what to do. Everyone continued their walking minding their own business.

Then, two angels came: a male asked me what happened and I related what took place in the last few seconds. He quickly went after the robber in the thick crowd. Thank God, due to the amount of people on the road, it was very difficult for the robber to have gotten far. He was apprehended and the gentleman returned my jewelry. I didn’t get to say a word of thanks because of the state I was in. Then the other angel came: a female in her late twenties probably, quickly held on to me and carried me through the entire crowd until we arrived in front of the Botanical Gardens entrance. I felt very safe indeed with her. She carried me safe giving me encouraging words and waited with me patiently until I was able to locate my friends. Then she, too, went off. I didn’t get to thank her properly as well.

It was related to me by a few friends that the robber, who was a young male, was given a good beating at the site where he snatched the jewel. I do not know if he was arrested.

I want to thank the two individuals who helped me that day. The jewel wasn’t important but it soothes my heart to know that there are caring and honest Guyanese out there (my angels as I call them) who are looking out for others’ interests. I am ever grateful to the gentleman and the girl who are truly angels in our land. To them, if they are reading this, please contact this newspaper which I have sent my cell phone number. I would really like to make contact with them to express my profound gratitude.
