Morton, Martin dropped for disciplinary reasons

KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC) – The Leeward Islands team management dropped captain Runako Morton and leading bowler Anthony Martin because of disciplinary reasons following their WICB Regional Four-day match against Combined Campuses & Colleges (CCC) this past weekend in Barbados.

Team manager Hugh Gore said the two key players have been suspended because of an “incident” during the Leewards’ victory over CCC at the Three Ws Oval that he did not elaborate on.

A decision will be made today who takes over as captain.

Morton, who has played 15 Tests and 49 One Day International (ODI) matches, led the Leewards to a record of two wins, one draw and three losses from six games this season.

Leg-spinner Martin is the Leewards’ leading bowler with 23 wickets and only Jamaica’s Odean Brown (34), CCC’s Ryan Austin (32) and the Windwards’ Shane Shillingford (27) have taken more wickets.

The Leewards will be missing four key players in the weekend’s eighth-round game against tournament leaders Jamaica – Morton, Martin, West Indies pacer Lionel Baker and injured opening batsman Kieran Powell.

Baker is with the West Indies team in Barbados for the fourth Test against England.

Batsmen Austin Richards and Codville Rogers, off-spinner Justin Athanaze and pacer Brent Defreitas have been brought in to replace the quartet for the match starting tomorrow at Sabina Park, the beginning of the return games.

In their first-round meeting in St Kitts, Jamaica rallied to beat the Leewards by six wickets after trailing on first innings.

Jamaica are tournament leaders with 60 points, nine ahead of Barbados (51), followed by Trinidad and Tobago (39), Windwards (36) and Leewards (31).

LEEWARDS SQUAD – Shane Jeffers, Montcin Hodge, Austin Richards, Codville Rogers, Tino Willett, Omari Banks, Steve Liburd, Devon Thomas, Wilden Cornwall, Gavin Tonge, Justin Athanaze, Brent Defreitas, Akito Willett
