THE Amelia’s Ward Jets fired on five cylinders as five players got into double figure scores but the main spring scoring of centre Dwayne ‘Brown Sugar’ Roberts with a game high 26 points which helped the Victory Valley Royals down the Amelia’s Ward side 72-67 as play in the second round of the Linden Amateur Basketball Association’s / Pioneer Construction Senior club basketball championship bounced off at the Mackenzie Sports Club hard court. The win by the Royals Saturday night pushed them into the joint lead they now hold with Jets on 12 points after being in second position behind the Jets and Wismar Pistons when the first round ended. Roberts was supported by forward Troy Jeffrey with 14 points, as centre Lawrence DaCosta and guard Alwyn Rodney added eight points each in the win as Royals led throughout at intervals 15-12, 41-26, 55-39 and finally 72-67. The top shoots for the Jets were guard Neil Simon with 14 points as back court players Delbert Kitt and Akeem Kanhai each got 12 points, and Kevin Joseph had 11 while centre Allister Webster 10. In the other game between bottom of the table New Ballers and Alleyene’s Retrieve Raiders, the Ballers scored a sound 72-59 win behind Donnel Benjamin’s 18 point game and Errol Reddock’s 10 and nine by Stravin Ettienne. Devon Gittens was the best player for the Raiders with 14 points, while Omar Sam contributed 11. The seven first division clubs are contesting this championship with the Royals and Jets in the lead with 12 points each, while Pistons have 11 with Patriots and Ballers on 9, and Bulls and Raiders in the cellar on 8 points each
