THE $3B allocated to construct a new East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) outlet would provide better drainage of the conservancy when it reaches high levels without affecting residents.
This is a welcome decision by the President in light of the present situation where the conservancy had to be drained through the Mahaica, Mahaicony and Abary Creeks.
The fact that the government has made this difficult decision surely attests to its dedication to see its people live in a better environment.
The government spent $1.7B to enhance drainage and irrigation in 2008 and if Guyanese are honest they would agree that more and more resources had been put into the drainage and irrigation systems since the amount of pumps have doubled and more excavators were bought.
The $100M that he also spoke of for farmers whose cultivation areas were affected by heavy rainfall is indeed heart warming.
I’m sure the actions of the President will live after him.
