– bagged more than $1M in cash and jewellery
– three elderly women left counting their losses
TWO daring daylight armed robberies on Friday have left two sisters and a vendor counting their losses.
One occurred at about 13:00h, during which two women on holiday here were robbed while in their Toucan Drive, South Ruimveldt Gardens home.
Police said the sisters, 70-year-old Marjory Kriger and Rita Alphonso, 64, were confronted and held at gunpoint by two armed men who had entered the premises through an open door.
The bandits took away 3000 pounds sterling, GY$40,000 and two silver necklaces from the sisters before making good their escape.
The other robbery occurred earlier in the day, at about 10:45h, at Agricola, East Bank Demerara, during which 63-year-old Rajdai Ramotar was attacked and robbed by two armed men while in a minibus.
Reports are that Ramotar joined the vehicle at Leonora, while one of the suspects joined the vehicle at Vreed-en-Hoop, both West Coast Demerara villages.
However, when the bus reached Agricola, the suspect told the driver to stop and as he got off, he pulled out a handgun and held Ramotar at gunpoint before being joined by another armed man, who was standing in the vicinity of the Agricola Post Office, police said.
They then took away a handbag containing $480,000 from Ramotar before escaping into Agricola. (Delana Isles)
