New lawyer continues family tradition

ON Monday last Nirvana Singh was admitted to the Bar by Justice Diana Insanally after her petition was presented by Senior Counsel Edward Luckhoo, following in the footsteps of her sister Ravina who is an Attorney-at-Law in Toronto, Canada and her late father, Attorney-at-Law Vejai Singh.Nirvana K. J. Singh is the youngest daughter of Fazia Singh and the late Vejai Singh. Her father graduated from the Norman Manley Law School in 1985 and practised law in Guyana for 13 years before passing away in 1999.

Nirvana graduated as an Honour Student from the Woodlands Secondary School in Mississauga, Canada in 2010. After returning to Guyana to pursue her Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), she graduated with distinction from the University of Guyana in 2013. Upon graduating, she was awarded the McKay and Moore Prize for Second Best Graduating Law Student.

She went on to obtain her Legal Education Certificate from the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, where she secured a Certificate of Merit for obtaining ‘A’ grades in nine courses out of eleven.

Nirvana received several academic prizes from the law school, including the Phelps and Company Prize for Best Performance in Civil Procedure and Practice I, the Oswald J. Wilson and Company Prize for Best Performance in Landlord and Tenant, the Cameron and Shepherd Prize for Best Performance in Civil Procedure and Practice I and II by a Guyanese student, the National Insurance Property Development Company Prize for Outstanding Performance in Civil Procedure and Practice II and the Fitzwilliam Stone, Furness-Smith and Morgan Prize for Best Performance in Civil Procedure and Practice II.

While at the Hugh Wooding Law School, she was elected Secretary of the Student Representative Council, 2014-2015. She also served as a member of the Hugh Wooding Law School Hindu Students Society. Additionally, Nirvana was a student attorney with the Hugh Wooding Law School Child Advocacy Clinic led by Magistrate Gibson. She completed her in-service training in 2014 at the Attorney General’s Chambers and Ministry of Legal Affairs and at the firm of Luckhoo and Luckhoo. She also worked as a volunteer at the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic in 2011.
