COUNSEL WANTS LAW TO PERMIT HOMO RELATIONS
(Guyana Chronicle April 4, 1979)
Barrister-at-Law Stanley Moore has said that the criminal law in Guyana should be amended to permit homosexual relations between consenting adults.
He said that the United Kingdom had already amended laws to permit this.
Mr. Moore a lecturer on criminal law at the University of Guyana was at the time making a plea in mitigation before Principal Magistrate Owen Fung-kee-Fung for former Minister of Labour employee Wendell Brotherson who pleaded guilty to committing an act of gross indecency with another male person.
In a plea for leniency the counsel said that it was wrong for the law to seek to suppress the natural sexual urgings of individuals with homosexual tendencies.
He argued that a homosexual was a person who was born with a deformity for which he or she was not responsible and to condemn such a person would be like condemning a person born with a deformed lip palate or limbs.
The lawyer said that he would agree that the law should continue to frown on homosexual acts between adults and children or young persons, adding that to his mind such persons should be dealt with severely.
Brotherson of 50, Princess Street and Phillip Charles of North Ruimveldt who were charged jointly with the offence were both saved prison sentences.
Brotherson was fined $126 and Charles $500 by Magistrate Fung-kee-Fung.
Court Prosecutor Cyril Fredericks stated that on February 7, 1978 police on patrol entered a yard to investigate a report and found the two men committing the act.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m.
The counsel contended that this was not a case where the two men were causing a disturbance in the yard and the Police had to be sent for.
He said that the police went into a yard to chase a man who committed a robbery.

POLICE WARN PARENTS AFTER ANOTHER MYSTERY DEATH
(Guyana Chronicle April 9, 1979)
The police yesterday advised parents and guardians in Greater Georgetown to keep their children off the streets after dark following the discovery of the body of a school boy yesterday morning in a trench at Laing Avenue Housing Scheme.
Nine-year old Egland Blackman’s body was found near a small clump of bush overhanging the trench and about 500 yards away from where the body of Tracey Richardson was found a week ago.
Although the boy’s death might be the result of an accident or misadventure, police have not ruled out the theory that he may have been strangled and thrown into the trench.
A police official said that if this theory proves to be correct then a homicidal maniac was on the loose.
Last week Trancy Richardson was found murdered in the same area after she was sent on an errand.
However the other theory is that Blackman could have been in the company with other children swimming in the trench and that he drowned.
Meanwhile, until the post mortem examination is performed parents especially in the area are advised to keep their children at home after dark.

POLICE RULE OUT FOUL PLAY
(Guyana Chronicle April 18, 1979)
Police have ruled out foul play in the death of nine year old Egland Blackman whose body was found floating in the Laing Avenue trench Friday last.
A police spokesman said that Egland whose body was found 500 yards from where the body of nine-year old Tracey Richardson was found, died from drowning.
Egland and some other boys went fishing when he fell into the trench and drowned.
But the lawmen are definitely working on a murder theory in connection with Richardson whose body was found one day after she was sent to purchase kerosene and did not return. Clifford Stanley can be reached to discuss any of the foregoing articles at cliffantony@gmail.com or cell phone # 657 2043.
