A 16-year-old trainee mechanic resisted an alleged armed-robbery attempt on Tuesday, after a man reportedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at him and demanded his motorcycle and cellular phone at the La Grange Old Road, West Bank Demerara.
The police in Regional Division #3 said the incident occurred at about 11:30hrs on September 1, 2026.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the teenager had advertised his motorcycle for sale on Facebook Marketplace during August. A 20-year-old man subsequently contacted him, inspected the motorcycle and indicated that he would return on September 1 to complete the purchase.
However, when the suspect returned, he allegedly pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the teen and demanded the motorcycle keys and cellular phone.
The teenager resisted and managed to escape, after which he alerted nearby residents.
The suspect reportedly attempted to flee but was pursued and apprehended.
The police said the object allegedly used during the incident was recovered and was later confirmed to be a toy gun.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
