THE revival of the Arawak dialect in Guyana continues to receive much prominence, and the topic was the theme of a recently concluded meeting among the three Guianas, Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon reported yesterday during his weekly post-Cabinet media briefing at Office of the President.
The meeting which was held in French Guiana was attended by respective representatives of that and the other two Guianas – Suriname and Guyana. A delegation from the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs represented the latter.
The discourse at the meeting centred on the three countries’ respective efforts at the language revival. These include their effort at the teaching of the language and, preparation of work books.
Just recently Government through the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs launched the Arawak Language Project, in Capoey, Region 2, which focuses on educating children, ages 4 to 10 years, in the village, in the Arawak dialect. The project, launched on September 16 has 10- month duration.
Dr Luncheon reiterated Government’s support for the project and other such initiatives that seek to foster cultural diversity.
