PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar has set the records straight in regard to the confirmation of Leroy Brumell as Guyana’s Police Commissioner, which became effective from Monday, October 07, following a swearing in ceremony at the Office of the President in Georgetown. The President said that after the late Police Commissioner Henry Greene had demitted office in 2012, he, as president, and in accordance with the established procedures, disclosed to the Leader of the Opposition his intention to choose Leroy Brumell to act in the capacity of police commissioner as Greene’s successor.
He said that at the close of a meeting with Mr. Granger, Brummell was appointed to act as Commissioner of Police, but with passage of time, Government saw Brumell’s satisfactory work, and performance of the Guyana Police Force grew under the supervision of the acting Commissioner of Police. However, he was frustrated in his determination to confirm Mr. Brumell as Police Commissioner because of the delays in holding meaningful consultations with the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. David Granger.
It was only last week that the Leader of the Opposition, MR Granger, thought it fit to avail himself to meet with him as President in respect to the confirmation of Mr. Brumell, and Mr. Granger give his no objection to his decision to confirm Mr. Brumell as the substantive Commissioner of Police.
Following that meeting with the Leader of the Opposition, President Ramotar said, he arranged for the public to be informed that the way had been cleared for Mr. Brumell to be confirmed as police commissioner.
President Ramotar expressed gratitude to Mr. Brumell for his years of service to the Guyana Police Force, and expressed interest in seeing Mr. Brumell continue serving as Commissioner of Police.
It was only two Sundays ago that the residents of Region 3 called for the confirmation of Leroy Brumell as the country’s Police Commissioner during an outreach the commissioner held in the region.
