ON the eve of Guyana’s 56th Republic Anniversary, the nation stood poised between reflection and celebration, as President, Dr Irfaan Ali declared that the country is now “strong, secure, prosperous and respected,” no longer a quiet footnote in international affairs but a recognised leader in climate action and sustainable development.
On the lawns of the Public Buildings, military bands delivered stirring renditions of patriotic tunes, their brass and melodies echoing through the night air as ranks of uniformed officers moved in disciplined synchrony.
Precision drills and ceremonial marches underscored the strength and security President Ali spoke of in his national address, offering a visual testament to the country’s resilience and sovereignty.
Cultural troupes followed, transforming the stage into a living tapestry of the Guyanese identity. Dancers adorned in elaborate costumes paid homage to the nation’s diverse heritage, weaving tradition with contemporary flair.
In his address, President Ali emphasised that the republic’s prosperity is rooted not only in economic growth, but in targeted investments that enrich lives.
He pointed to advancements in education, healthcare and infrastructure such as new roads, bridges and ports designed to catalyse production for generations as pillars of a more inclusive society. These investments, he said, are actively reducing inequality and ensuring that no citizen is left behind.
“We are weaving a nation where no one is left behind. We are building a republic that is a portrait of its people, and that portrait remains unfinished until every face is painted with dignity,” the President said.
He highlighted too the empowerment of Indigenous communities, the dynamism of youth and the leadership of women as essential to building a more secure and democratic future.
“On this 56th anniversary, I say without fear of contradiction that our republic is strong, it is secure, it is prosperous, it is respected, it is democratic,” he said.
And as the Golden Arrowhead, Guyana’s national flag was hoisted for the 56th time in commemoration of the country becoming a republic, the President’s call for national pride resonated beyond the festivities.
He charged every Guyanese to reflect on their role in strengthening the republic, insisting that pride and unity are responsibilities no one else can shoulder on the nation’s behalf.
“Let it be said of us that we did not merely inherit the republic. We made it better. Let it be known that we did not simply occupy a land. We lifted it and let it be remembered that in building our nation, we build each other,” the President said.
