BUILT on faith, sustained by prayer, and wrapped in the love of her family, Ms. Eileen Bunbury has reached a remarkable milestone—her 100th birthday. On Wednesday, Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud, visited Ms. Bunbury at her home in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, to celebrate the centenarian’s life and legacy.
Born and raised in Sparendaam, Ms. Bunbury is the proud mother of 13 children and a matriarch whose life has been devoted to family, faith, and community. Her early education at St. Paul’s and Wesleyan Methodist Primary Schools laid a foundation of discipline, devotion, and love that would guide her through a century of life.
After completing her schooling, Ms. Bunbury dedicated herself to caring for her family, finding joy in everyday activities such as sewing, singing, and nurturing those around her. Her unwavering faith has remained central to her life; Sundays have always been sacred, and she consistently encouraged her family to join her in worship.
Today, Granny Eileen’s family spans five generations, including 28 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren—a living testament to the values she has instilled through patience, prayer, and love.
In sharing her wisdom with younger generations, Ms. Bunbury offered a simple yet powerful message: “Don’t give up. Keep on praying.”
Minister Persaud described the centenarian as an inspiration to the nation. “Granny Eileen exemplifies resilience, faith, and dedication. Her life reminds us of the importance of family, community, and service,” the Minister said.
