Torres shines as Chelsea ease to win at Swindon

FERNANDO TORRES was both finisher and creator as Chelsea’s multi-million pound second-string booked their place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a 2-0 win at Swindon yesterday.

The striker has struggled to make an impact under Jose Mourinho so far this term but produced a timely reminder of his capabilities with a tap-in that broke the League One side’s resistance on the half hour.
The Spain international had missed an ilt-edged chance just moments earlier but reacted well to slide home the rebound after Juan Mata’s shot was well saved by Wes Foderingham.
Torres was visibly buoyed by his strike and just six minutes later he turned provider, bamboozling two defenders with a sublime drag back before slipping a slide-rule pass into Ramires who dinked a delightful finish over the keeper.
It was enough to see off a young Robins side who made a real fight of it in the second half and had a goal chalked off when Dany N’Guessan nodded in from an offside position.
Willian and Torres then missed opportunities to add to the margin of victory on a night when all eyes were on Mata, who was handed only his third start under Mourinho.
The Blues boss made no secret of the fact he was using the game to cast his eye over players he wanted to see more from and he would have been pleased with how his team performed after he made 10 changes from the one that beat Fulham at the weekend.
It wasn’t a perfect night for Chelsea, however, as young Dutchman Marco van Ginkel and his replacement, Ramires both limped off injured.
