Chief Fire Officer, Marlon Gentle said, yesterday, that the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) is awaiting a report from the Regional Electrical Inspector to make a pronouncement and determine the cause.
Meantime, following a meeting involving parents, Ministry of Education officials and teachers on Wednesday afternoon, at La Grange Primary School, also on West Bank Demerara, it was decided that classes for the displaced 699 L’Aventure students will resume on Monday.
The blaze in their building started in the administrative block and Gentle said when the GFS received the call at 07:50 hrs, two tenders, one each from Leonora, West Coast Demerara and West Ruimveldt in Georgetown, responded.
He said the West Ruimveldt firemen reached the scene first and, immediately, began dousing the flames.
They were soon joined by those from Leonora and, together they managed to contain the conflagration to the area where it originated, that included the Headmistress’s office, the Library, the Home Economics and other classrooms, some of which were saved.
Pending the determination of the origin of the flames, Gentle noted that, within the previous 48 hours, the area had been experiencing some electrical power fluctuations and that may have contributed to what happen at the school.
Other reports said there was an electricity problem in the edifice which was reported but not addressed.
Origin of L’Aventure School fire still being probed
