THE Guyana Chronicle was out and about on Friday, interacting with members of the public to hear their views on the recently held elections which gave Guyanese an opportunity to exercise their democratic right to vote for a political party of their choice.
Guyana’s General and Regional Elections take place every five years to elect a president and government to govern the country.
Michael Fernandes told the Guyana Chronicle that the voting process on September 1 was simple, and everything was done with relative ease.
He did not have the need to utilise the online system launched by the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) since he knew where he had to go and cast his vote.
Now that E-Day has passed and we are awaiting GECOM’s official declaration, he expressed confidence that the political party that wins will fulfill its manifesto promises to the nation.
An employee of a private massaging service said she voted, and it was quite normal. According to her, things were calm. She expects everything to be ‘normal’ once a government is in place.
A woman, who took a break from shopping to speak to this publication, related that the voting process was smoother than years gone by and when a new government takes office, she hopes all Guyanese will experience an improved standard of life.
Meanwhile, Xavier Peters stated that as a first-time voter, the process in his neighbourhood was very slow. He said he was the ninth person in a long line of voters.
The young man reported that there was only one polling station in his village and he showed up there just after 07:00hrs and voted at around 10:00hrs on E-Day.
Peters added that the process can be improved next time around with at least another polling station in his community to prevent voters from having to wait for hours to cast their vote.
Sasha (only name given) said the voting process was quick, simple and she did not have to use the online portal to find her polling station since she knew exactly where she had to go to vote.
She added that going forward she would like a government that will put the interest of the people first and deliver on its promises to enhance the lives of everyone.
Sasha noted that the entire nation is awaiting the official declaration of the results to move forward and that regardless of which political party is in power, we have to live in harmony and peace.
