NAMILCO presents cheque to RBC for CARICOM Day race meet : … one year supply of Wheat Up for winners

HAVING outlined the change of arrangements for this year’s National Milling Company (NAMILCO)/Wheat Up-sponsored CARICOM Day race meeting, president of Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) Brian Allen yesterday received a cheque for close to $400 000, which will be used to offset expenses for Monday’s event. Chief Financial Officer of NAMILCO Fitzroy McLeod said it was always a pleasure for his company to be associated with RBC for this event, adding that this year’s sponsorship will see an increase in prize money, while he applauded the club for the initiative of using the Sea Wall bandstand this time around.
“We see the innovations of this year’s event as one that will make it a family affair, based on the plans RBC has in store to make it a successful one and once again, we have extreme pleasure at being associated with the club for this event,” stated McLeod.
While calling for the building of the long-awaited velodrome which according to Allen can help strengthen the sport locally since there is potential, based on the results in recent times, the RBC president said they decided to take the event to the Sea Wall bandstand, to give the sponsor and the sport, more mileage.
“By taking the sport to the Sea Wall bandstand, we will be giving the sponsor and the sport more mileage, while at the same time bringing back the spectators to the sport, since there has been spectators’ absence in recent times.
“However, I think the time is ripe for us to have a velodrome which will help prevent the numerous accidents that are taking place on the roadways with our cyclists, who have the potential to compete internationally, since the records show that for the past few years,” said Allen,
He thanked NAMILCO for coming on board with his club to host the event for another year, adding that the individual race winners will receive one year’s supply of Wheat Up, a trophy, cash and a certificate.
The prize structure was also handed out to the media, with the first three finishers in the BMX events receiving $3 000, $2 000 and $1 500 respectively, while for the Females, Mountain Bikes and 12 to 14 Juvenile category winners, the top three finishers will pocket $5 000, $3 000 and $2 000 respectively.
The Categories 1 to 3, Category 4 and Category 5, Veterans Under-50 and Veterans Over-50 top three finishers will pedal off with $6 000, $4 000 and $3 000 respectively, Team Time Trials top three finishers $10 000, $8 000 and $6 000, in that order.
For the Wheat Up Classic 30-lap event, the first place finisher will take home $30 000 and a trophy, while the other top five finishers will respectively receive $25 000, $15 000, $7 000, $6 000 and $4 000 along with trophies.
A well-stocked bar, musical sound system and an events announcer will also be on spot to keep cyclists, cycling enthusiasts and the spectators lively, during the course of the day’s programme.
