Citizens of Guyana will be affected by the budget cuts

THE citizens of Guyana will be affected by the cuts in the 2013 budget made by the two opposition parties, APNU and AFC, from GPL to Ministry of Housing, the Specialty Hospital, the new and modernised Cheddi Jagan International Airport, the Amaila Hydro Power project and I can go on forever.

People must understand that for the past seven years Guyana’s economy has been growing at a five to seven per cent average, annually. All of this is because of good management by the present administration.
The money is there in Guyana’s treasury so, “why cut the budget”. Unlike the past government which could not show growth in the economy, did not have a foreign reserve. In other words, Guyana was broke under the PNC’s rule.
Basic items such as medicine, housing, water, foodstuff, fuel, cooking gas etc were very scarce because the PNC had no foreign exchange to import.
Let’s look at City Hall for example, every time the Mayor opens his mouth all you hear is how cash strapped City Hall is. They have no money to pay workers, contractors, GPL, NIS etc. Now we hear a new Town Clerk who is managing the financial affairs of City Hall and showing money in the bank and guess what? The Mayor and Deputy Mayor want her removed. City Hall affairs remind all Guyanese of the PNC dictatorship rule and oppressive regime.
Because of these budget cuts, Guyanese will now have to pay more for electricity, the thousands that are waiting for house lots will be greatly affected; more Guyanese will now have to go overseas for complex surgeries; but what about those who cannot afford it? What will happen to them and who really cares, the opposition certainly doesn’t give a damn.
Benefiting from low and reduced electricity bills will now just be a dream for us Guyanese and the long lines and outdated structure of our airport will remain the same and tourists can forget about ever exploring or visiting a modern Guyana.

As a nation we must wake up and become aware of what the combined opposition is doing to our nation with their one-seat majority; we must now unite and fight to regain that balance of power that was stolen from us by the opposition, and join in solidarity to fight for what is rightfully ours so that progress and government programmes can continue.
