RHTYSC/Busta ‘Champion of Champions’ : Ninth edition bowls off today with four matches

DEFENDING and seven-time champions of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club-organised, Guyana Beverage Company-sponsored Busta ‘Champion of Champions’ knockout competition, Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets (RHTGG) will open their defence of the title today, when they take on Karibee Rice Port Mourant at the Area ‘H’ ground. That’s when the ninth annual RHTYSC/Busta Champion of Champions cricket tournament for the top eight cricket clubs in the Ancient County of Berbice bowls off at four venues across Berbice, featuring some of the best cricketers.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTYSC, Hilbert Foster, has disclosed that all arrangements are in place for a highly successful tournament which should be completed in less than a month, adding that all teams have been informed that players’ discipline on and off the field must be of the highest standard and all umpires’ decision must be respected.
For today’s encounter at the Area ‘H’ ground, the home team RHTGG would include Royston Crandon, Delbert Hicks, Clinton Pestano, Rajiv Ivan, Shawn Pereira, Eon Hooper and Dominic Rikhi.
Their opponents are the only other team to have won this tournament and will be looking to throw open this year’s edition, with an upset victory.
However, the once powerful Karibee Rice Port Mourant lineup will be looking to the services of former West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Zamal Khan, Devendra Thurkadeen, Yogindra Harrinarine and Tony McKenzie to churn out good performances, if they intend to upset the defending champions.
At the Blairmont ground, the home team, spearheaded by Waqar Hassan, Deveshwari Prashad, Altaf Khan and Kevon Jawahir would play a very strong Bermine team with players like Eugene La Fleur, Anthony D’Andrade, Romario Shepherd, Stephen Latcha and Joemal La Fleur.
Universal DVD Club Young Warriors, leg by Gajanand Singh, Richard Ramdeen, Balram Samaroo and Shimron Hetmyer would host West Berbice, who will be spearheaded by Keon Joseph, Krisendat Ramoo, Sherwin McPherson and Brandon Bess, at the Cumberland ground.
The final quarterfinal encounter will take place at the Albion Community Centre ground and will feature the hosts going up against Skeldon.
There is no doubt that Albion, whose lineup consists of Sewnarine Chattergoon, Devendra Bishoo, Jonathan Foo, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai and Kandasammy Surujnarine, will commence this contest as red-hot favourites.
Skeldon are the underdogs, but with players such as Anthony Bramble, Gary Phillips, Junior Blair, Parmanand Narine and Clavern Beresford they can very well spring a surprise on their much-fancied opponents and advance to the semifinals.
The organising club will be outfitting each team with coloured t/shirts, white balls and Busta drinks for snacks, along with the payment of umpires’ fees for the tournament which has at stake $100 000 and a trophy for the victorious team and  the runners-up receiving half of that amount and a trophy.
There will also be prizes for the Best Batsman, bowler and Man-of-the-Match in the final which is expected to be broadcast live on NCN Radio. All teams are asked to note that all matches will commence at 09:35hrs.
