LOCAL GOVERNMENT and Regional Development Minister, Ganga Persaud, reflecting on the People’s Progressive Party/Civic’s many achievements during the past 20 years, at a function at Mabaruma, Region 1, over the weekend, reminded that history has a way of repeating itself, if careful attention is not paid to it.
“It’s a time to reflect on the past, analyse the present, and look at where we intend to go….this land belongs to all Guyanese, as no government can claim of achieving development without the support of its people,” he said.
Region 1 residents have given tremendous support to Government over the years, and this commitment was highly lauded by Minister Persaud on behalf of the government.
He called on Guyanese to live in unity, noting that it is the dream of the PPP/C Government and its founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, that Guyanese, regardless of race, colour or creed live in harmony.
“ I urge all, as we reflect on our gains over the past 20 years, to continue to work together to build greater unity, so that we can achieve our motto of One People, One Nation, One destiny,” Minister Persaud said.
According to the Local Government Minister, a house divided cannot stand, and he reminded the people that a country is stronger when united.
He pointed out that in any country there will be critics; however, society must look at whose actions are really hindering the country’s progress.
Mention was also made of bilateral ties the country has made over the years. This has seen a road link from Guyana to Brazil realised, while discussions are ongoing to have links from Guyana to Suriname and Venezuela. The link with Suriname will be a bridge across the Corentyne River.
The ICT boost in Guyana, the OLPF programme and the hydro power project are some of the achievements, which Minister Persaud, said will continue to open opportunities for Guyanese.
“These are dreams and visions that the government continues to pursue…our work of building, transforming, modernising and re-building Guyana is a work in progress, and for us to move faster we need all on board,” he added.
Minister Persaud also reminded Guyanese to remain focused at all times and to identify facts from fiction; he also called for political maturity among all politicians. “There is no doubt that Guyana is and has been on the move over the last 20 years under the PPP/C Government,” he said.
The meeting, which attracted scores of residents, toshaos and village councillors of Mabaruma, Kumaka and Hosororo, was entertained by a kaleidoscope of cultural presentations, including dances, songs and poetry.
On October 5, the PPP/C Government marked 20 years of development. This was marked by pictorial exhibitions and a grand observance on October 9 at the Guyana International Conference Centre (GICC), when the party came in for much praise, especially from the private sector, for the economy’s continued growth, enabling the creation of job opportunities for many.
