Atwell – lone overseas pugilist on tonight’s boxing card

DOMINICAN Republic-based national featherweight champion Clive ‘Wonder Kid’ Atwell will be the lone foreigner for this evening’s boxing card dubbed ‘Foreign Invasion’ and promoted by Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore of Hurry Up Promotions (HUP) at the Banks DIH Thirst Park ground. He (Atwell) who will be facing the sport’s local journeyman Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers was expected to lead a group of foreign pugilists for the night’s action, which included Moore, Juan Carlos Pena, Alan Phelan and Frank Galarza.
However, a press release sent by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control on behalf of Moore said the head of HUP regrets to advise that the US Team scheduled to arrive in Guyana today and originally comprising Pena, Phelan and Galarza will no longer be coming to Guyana.
The team was initially set back as Galarza fought to a difficult draw on the September 22, 2012 against Alantez Fox at the Resorts World Casino in Queens New York which left him less than ready to step in to the ring against a seasoned opponent as Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman.
Phelan suffered a similar fate, losing his fight on the same evening and is also now equally unprepared to go into battle again so quickly.
The Moore/Carlos Pena fight always threatened to be a very difficult one for Moore as Pena boasts a record of 19 wins and no loss, 14 of those wins coming by way of knockout, as Moore’s promotional and managerial activities have weighed heavily on him and severely hindered his training eventually forcing him to opt out of the fight.
Not one to back away from a challenge, Moore hopes to take on Pena on a later card and promises that Guyana will still see this fight at some stage.
Despite the major disappointment, Saturday’s card is still a green light and boxing fans, who are expected to witness the night’s action, will see Eastman take on reigning World Boxing Council/ Caribbean Boxing Federation welterweight champion Simeon ‘Candyman’ Hardy in the main bout.
Other fights on the card pit Edmond ‘Wonder Boy’ De Clou, the WBC/CABOFE middleweight champion, against Jermain King, Mitchell Rogers against Anthony Augustine, Charlton Skeete and Richard Williamson going head-to-head and the Atwell/Rogers encounter.
