Man accused of robbing US military officer remanded

ALVIN Archer, who allegedly snatched a purse from a US military officer who is in Guyana for the Tradewinds exercise, on Wednesday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Archer, who pleaded not guilty to the larceny charge, will make his next court appearance on July 7.

The charge states that on Sunday, June 20, at Croal Street, Georgetown, Archer stole from the person of Melissa Owens, one brown Aobo purse valued at $8000, one cellphone valued at $250,000, and US$46, which is equivalent to G$9200.

According to the prosecution, Owens, who is a member of the United States Coast Guard, was walking along Croal Street about 10:30 hours with two colleagues when she was robbed.

It is alleged that Archer, who was among a crowd of card-game players, saw Owens and her colleagues and began to trail them. When he got close to Owens, he snatched her purse and ran away.

He was later apprehended in the vicinity of America Street and Avenue of the Republic by ranks who were on mobile patrol.

The stolen purse was found on the roadway.
