CONTINENTAL Cycle Club’s Geron Williams outsprinted local sprint king Alonso Greaves to take the fifth annual Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham birth anniversary cycle road race last Sunday, in a time of 1. 12:58s. The event was sponsored by the Burnham Foundation in honour of the late Head of State of Guyana and saw a record 51 cyclists including Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Robin Persaud and juniors Paul De Nobrega and Raynauth Jeffrey face the starter on a windy morning.
Both De Nobrega and Jeffrey continued to leave their mark on the sport this year, with the former taking the junior category in a time of 1.13:01s, while he placed third overall behind Geron Williams and Greaves, with Jeffrey finishing second in the juniors and fourth overall, while Persaud and Linden’s Orville Hinds rounded off the top six positions.
Not only did Geron Williams take the top prize, but he carted off four prime prizes, Greaves (3) and De Nobrega and Jeffrey two each, while Marlon Williams took the first one before he opted out of the race to attend his daughter’s christening.
Another Linden rider, Michael Anthony, was third in the junior category of the race in which Naomi Singh was the lone female to complete same in a time of 1.26:41s, after her rival Hazina Barratt started but was forced out due to cramps.
Raymond Newton took the Veterans category ahead of Berbician Thuran Harris and Junior Niles, while motor racing sensation Kevin Jeffrey copped the top spot in the Veterans Over-50 category ahead of the resolute Maurice Fagundes.
