Police clear air on teenage schoolgirl rape investigation

A NEWS report was carried in the Monday January 16, 2012 edition of the Kaieteur News under the caption “Rosignol school girl raped – parents say police are dragging feet on matter”. This story deals with the alleged abduction and rape of a 16-year-old of No. 4 Village, West Coast Berbice. The Guyana Police Force has responded to the article by stating that the first report received in relation to this incident was on Tuesday January 10, 2012, when the teenager, accompanied by her father, visited the Blairmont Police Station to allege that she had been abducted by a man on Sunday January 08, 2012, and taken to a house at Bath Settlement, WCB, where she had been raped.
At the time of the report, detectives who deal with such matters were responding to an armed robbery and abduction that occurred at No. 22 Bel Air, West Coast Berbice, which resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of stolen property.
However, the police at Blairmont station took the report, and the teenager was escorted to the Fort Wellington Hospital to be medically examined. Under the circumstances, the father of the girl was advised to return to the station at Fort Wellington the following day (Wednesday).
The police are contending that the man reported to the police at Fort Wellington station during the morning of Wednesday January 11, but when he arrived there, the ranks were taking statements from the victims and witnesses in relation to the armed robbery at Bel Air, West Coast Berbice. As such, he was requested to return during the afternoon.
However, up till Monday, January 16, when the article was published, he had not so done.
Meanwhile, following investigations conducted, the named suspect was arrested by the police on Friday January 13, 2012, and was still in police custody at the time that article was published.
The teenager has since been contacted, and a statement has been taken from her. The investigation is likely to be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions by Monday next for legal advice.
