THE sixth Day of Interaction for 2011, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport/National Sports Commission in partnership with the Regional Administration, Region 10, was held at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground last Sunday.
People from various communities of the region gathered at the venue in large numbers to participate in the many sports disciplines.
It was encouraging to see the Day of Interaction bring hundreds of people from throughout the region together to compete, to have fun and to get to know one another for the first time and in some cases better.
So well organised was the activity that communities such as Kwakwani, Landerville, Muritaro, Kara Kara, Aroaima, Coomacka, Ituni, Maria Elizabeth, Old England, Wisrock, Milerock, Spikeland, Raribo among others, along with the more centralised communities converged on the Mackenzie Sports Club ground and participated in softball cricket, dominoes, football, draughts, cycling and table tennis.
The weather was very hot at the start then it rained. Eventually, it became humid and encouraging for the athletes.
The day’s activities commenced with an assembly of all present who heard remarks from Director of Sport Neil Kumar, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr Frank Anthony who informed the gathering of government’s achievements in sports and its efforts and programmes for all Guyanese, in the future.
The Hon. Prime Minister (acting President) Sam Hinds echoed the sentiments of the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport and eventually declared the Day of Interaction open. Also present were the Regional Executive Officer, Regional Councillors and, notably. Brentnol Evans, Consulate in New York.
The athletes were highly competitive as they displayed great skills and talent in all the sports disciplines. There was also tremendous camaraderie among the athletes.
The final results are an indication of the keen contests of the games.
Table Tennis
Twelve youngsters participated in the competition which saw Keiona Crawford upstage Kord Johnson into second place in the final.
Draughts
There were eight contestants. Jason Swarving defeated Yaric Halley in the final. Both finalists are from Aroaima.
Dominoes
Of the six teams participating, the final saw Ituni with 37 games edge Spikeland with 32 games into second place, and Kwakwani into third position with 24 games.
Cycling
Twenty-five cyclists were involved in this programme in seven categories. The results are as follows:

Football
Nine young well-uniformed teams entered this competition – Small Goal Football.
The area where the games were played was a colourful spectacle as all the teams gathered in one place during the matches
At the conclusion of the matches which were played 5-a-side on a round-robin basis, Wismar Eagles with the most points emerged winners with Milerock taking the second position.
Softball Cricket
Male: After thrilling preliminary matches, Spikeland and Aroaima clashed in an exciting final. In a 3-over affair, both teams scored 18 runs. The final result was decided on a Super 3-ball bowl-off. Aroaima made 8 runs and Spikeland in reply were unable to get off the mark thus surrendering to Spikeland. Eight teams participated.
Female: There was no difference in the female category, Coomacka and Old England/Yaribo went head-to-head in the final.
Coomacka, batting first, made 19 runs and Old England/Yaribo scraped home by scoring the winning run off the last ball.
At the conclusion of the day’s activities, outstanding performers – individuals and communities – were awarded with trophies.
Sports gear and equipment were distributed to various communities to assist in the development of sports in the region.
