(Demerara Waves) POLICE Commissioner, Henry Greene yesterday again shrugged off claims by the United States that he has been linked to drug lords and he urged police officers to ensure they carry out their duties with integrity.
His reaction came just days after United States classified diplomatic cables released by Wikileaks specifically stated that western nations had not wanted him to become police commissioner because of alleged drug ties.
Addressing the opening of a Junior Officers Course, Greene poked fun at Wikileaks before urging attendees not to believe the contents of the widely published diplomatic cables that confirmed the reasons why the United States had revoked his visas in 2006. “I say to you – judge me by my record from then to now,” Greene said.
“I continue to challenge anyone, including policemen,- anyone to prove by involvement, my association, my dealing or anything as it relates to drug dealers or the drug trade,” said Greene.
President Bharrat Jagdeo at the weekend said he went ahead with Greene because no evidence was provided by the US to support its allegation that the police officer had benefited from proceeds of the drug trade.
On the need for integrity, Greene told participants of the 12-week Junior Officers Course that they must ensure that they are truthful at all times. “Something may go wrong, speak the truth, and speak it ever. Your knowledge, your attitude, and your values are what we start with,” he said.
He emphasised that sub-divisional heads must always keep abreast of their records, be punctual and communicate effectively with their colleagues. “Once you display that level of knowledge and grapple with the knowledge base, you will command respect from those below you” he said.
The course includes studies on competence and leadership techniques, communication skills, English usage, police powers, disciplinary procedures and operating in crisis situations, financial and stores records management. “Without your involvement and your knowledge and understanding of these areas, it will be difficult for you as junior officers to manage,” he added.
