Venus pulls out of Toronto with virus

(EUROSPORT) – Thirty-one-year-old Venus Williams who is currently ranked 34th in the world, has withdrawn from the Rogers Cup in Toronto at late notice, citing a viral illness. Williams, who has won seven Grand Slams in her career, was looking to build momentum in Canada ahead of the US Open at the end of the month but injury has restricted the number of matches she has played this year, and she has not played since losing to Tsvetana Pironkova in the last 16 at Wimbledon.
“I was really excited to play Toronto,” said Williams. “I came here ready to go and was practising. I wasn’t feeling very well and had to see the doctor today. I was diagnosed with a viral illness and unfortunately am unable to play. I am extremely disappointed. I’m very sorry to the fans and tournament.”
Venus’s withdrawal means Chinese qualifier Zhang Shuai takes her place in the draw, and she will meet Ana Ivanovic, a beaten semi-finalist in San Diego last week, in the first round. Lourdes Dominguez Lino also benefits from the news, taking a lucky loser spot.
“We are disappointed by Venus’s illness but our Rogers Cup fans got to see her on site at Rexall Centre at our official draw and celebrity tennis events. We wish Venus a speedy recovery and look forward to an exciting week of tennis at the Rogers Cup,” said Tournament Director Karl Hale.
