Charlestown 2010 cutlass murders cases PI begins

WILLIAM Lyte, the man accused of two murders and two attempted murders during a cutlass wielding rampage in Charlestown, Georgetown, in October 2010, made another Court appearance yesterday. As the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charges commenced, before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, called Sandra Joshua as the first witness.
Joshua is the stepdaughter of Cedric Blackman one of the deceased and she was followed by Rabia Shakoor, the daughter of the other dead victim, Ann Chan-A-Koon.
The unrepresented Lyte declined to ask the witnesses any questions.
However, when Shakoor finished her testimony, the prisoner told her: “I would just like to comfort you. It was not a willful act. It was some evil spirit on me. I didn’t mean to do it, it was not a normal act.”
On hearing what Lyte said, Shakoor burst into tears while on the witness stand.
The PI will continue today when four more witnesses are expected to give evidence.
The accused first appeared in Court on November 1. Particulars of the offences, with which he is charged, said, on October 26, at Charlestown, he murdered Blackman and Chan-A-Koon and unlawfully and maliciously wounded Radesh Persaud and Sean De Souza, with intent to kill the latter two.
He, allegedly, ran berserk at Russell and Howes Streets, Charlestown, where the murderous attack took place before he surrendered to police.
